The Lumix DMC LX3 is the new high end compact from Panasonic. Suitable for enthusiasts that perhaps want a compact option alongside their larger SLR, the 10.1 megapixel LX3 has a high sensitivity 1/1.63" CCD sensor which captures much more light than most alternative compact digital cameras, resulting in great quality images especially in low light conditions.
There is full manual control featured on the Panasonic Lumix DMC LX3, including a manual focus mode, manual exposure setting, shutter speed control, together with ISO sensitivity control. But you can also use the LX3 as an effective point and shoot camera using Panasonic's IA (intelligent auto) mode. When taking a shot with IA, the camera will detect current ambient conditions and optimise itself automatically to best capture the image.
With a 2.5x optical plus 4x digital zoom, the DMCLX3 does perhaps lack the zoom capability of some alternative models. However, the wide angle f/2.0 LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON lens does capture a wider picture than other compacts, with an effective 24mm capability.
Previewing images and navigating through the menus is made easy on the Panasonic Lumix DMC LX3, with its large 3 inch LCD display and joystick control. There is also a quick-menu option to provide a shortcut to some of the more commonly used settings. In addition, you have the option of overlaying various aids onto the display, including parallel lines and a histogram of the image.
The Lumix DMC LX3 can also record HD movies in a variety of settings: 4:3 aspect ratio: 640 x 480 pixels at 30 fps or 320 x 240 pixels at 30 fps, 16:9 aspect ratio: 848 x 480 pixels at 30 fps or 1280x720 pixels at 24fps.
You can also adjust the aspect ratio for still images using the slider button mounted on the top of the DMC LX3 lens.
